Service-oriented User Interface Technology

The New Name

Some know it as SOFEA, others as SOUI. There may or may not be many differences between the two, but one thing is clear: the idea needs a better name if it is to be easily talked about and become widely known. Besides having a sweeter name, it needs to be clearly defined so that the movement can gain pace.

There's plenty of room for contribution to the idea and definition, given that this is a fairly new, mixes old and new ideas. SOUIT is exciting as a technology and methodology. We hope to be able to add to the momentum behind it so that it is more widely understood and used.

There are still some areas that need a lot of fleshing out. For instance, how is security and authentication handled? What are the best practices for handling state? How can pages be best addressable and indexable? And on...

Inspiration

The SOUIT community owes much of its inspiration to the work of Matt Raible, first coining SOFEA and evangelizing it as something worth developing. In our sphere, Tom Valletta, who latched onto the idea of SOUIT, has helped us personally get excited about the prospects of writing SOUIT web apps.

Contributors

Steve Olson is author of Ajax on Java and generally fantastic.

Jake Trent is happily married to his beautiful wife, April, who thankfully indulges him in his aspirations for SOUITness.

Calling Ideas

Contributions to the site and to SOUIT in general is gratefully solicited. There are surely many who have better ideas about this than we do and we'd love to hear them. Future evolutions of this site will be sure to make that easier to do.
